Your First Order at Shang Palace Istanbul: Cantonese in 6 Steps

Build a balanced Cantonese table in six steps, from dim sum to roast dishes, seafood, vegetables, rice and tea.

A sharing table of Cantonese dishes at Shang Palace Istanbul

At Shang Palace, ordering one dish from every menu section is tempting. A memorable Cantonese table, however, is about balance rather than volume: a few bites of dim sum, a strong roast centre, a fresh vegetable, rice or noodles and tea. The six-step sequence is not a rulebook; it is a simple map for first-time guests who want the table to feel generous without becoming exhausting.

Why is a Cantonese table shared?

Forcing Cantonese food into a one-main-per-person structure can hide the range of techniques. Small openings, roast or barbecue dishes, seafood or meat, vegetables and rice work as complementary parts of a shared table.

Sharing does not mean unlimited ordering. Ask about portions and piece counts before the first round. For two guests, keep some steps small rather than choosing a large plate from all six categories. State allergies and preferences around shellfish, pork and vegetarian food before ordering.

6 steps for a first table

Place current-menu dishes into this order and ask the restaurant about availability.

  • 1 — Tea and pace: Decide drinks and ask that every hot dish not arrive at once.

  • 2 — Dim sum: Begin with one or two small choices matching the number of guests.

  • 3 — Roast or barbecue: Ask about portion and preparation time for sharing items such as duck.

  • 4 — Main protein: If roast meat is already central, do not add a second heavy meat automatically; consider seafood or a lighter option.

  • 5 — Vegetable: Put a seasonal green or vegetable between richer sauced plates.

  • 6 — Rice or noodles: Decide the filling quantity last rather than over-ordering starch at the beginning.

  • Add a shared dessert only if appetite allows.

  • Ask the service team about sauce, heat and ingredients at every step.

Hours, floor and dress

Shang Palace is open Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 23:00 and closed on Monday. The B1 dining room is non-smoking and the dress code is smart casual. If you are going late, ask about the kitchen's last order; Cantonese sharing loses its rhythm when rushed.

If duck is part of the plan, mention it while booking. Portion, preparation time and availability shape the rest of the table. Once duck becomes the centre, skip a second heavy meat and surround it with dim sum, vegetables and rice.

Should two guests complete all six steps?

Six steps do not mean six large dishes. Two guests can keep dim sum small, choose either the roast or main-protein step, then add vegetables and rice according to portions. The service team's advice on pieces and weight is safer than a fixed internet list.
